Overview

On December 8, 2024, the Assad regime fell, and Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) assumed control over much of Syria. The HTS-led interim authorities have control of the swathe of territory in central and west Syria from south of Damascus, up to Aleppo and out to the Mediterranean coast.

There are significant threats to New Zealanders in Syria. The security situation is extremely dangerous. There is an extreme threat from terrorism throughout Syria. A large number of foreign nationals have been kidnapped. Violent crime is common.

There are limited options for leaving Syria by commercial means, and many airports, roads and land borders are closed.

New Zealanders who choose to remain in Syria against the Ministry’s advice should maintain a low profile, be vigilant at all times, and remain conscious of their environment. We recommend avoiding all internal travel inside Syria unless it is to avoid immediate danger. Obtain professional security advice and ensure effective personal security measures are in place. Read our advice for New Zealanders in areas where there is violence or conflict.

Make a plan for departure, including securing a valid exit visa in your passport in advance in case you wish to depart at short notice.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Syria should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air. You should check that your travel insurance policy covers travel in Syria as exclusions are likely to apply.
