Exercise increased caution

Overview

The threat of military action in the region has reduced as the United States and Iran have come to an agreement to end hostilities. As at 16 June Kuwait’s airspace remains open however flight options are reduced due to damage at Kuwait International Airport. It is recommended that travellers contact their airline to confirm their flight before heading to Kuwait International Airport.

Between 28 February and 8 April, Iran launched over approximately 1,151 drone and missile strikes at Kuwait, targeting civilian infrastructure including water desalination plants and airports, industrial sites, oil production facilities, ports, and military facilities. While Kuwait intercepted the vast majority of these attacks, a small number resulted in both civilian and military injuries and deaths. These strikes also caused extended airport closures, significantly disrupting travel. There remains a threat of attacks against United States linked locations, Israeli and Jewish communities in the region.

If the security situation in the Middle East deteriorates, travel disruptions should be expected. Monitor the media to stay informed about current events in your travel destination.

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand. Terrorism is an ongoing threat in Kuwait. You should maintain a high level of personal security awareness, particularly in public places known to be frequented by foreigners.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Kuwait should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest - demonstrations occasionally take place in Kuwait and may be triggered by events in both Kuwait and the wider region. Follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • Crime - violent crime towards foreigners is rare, but take care in areas like Jahra and Jleeb Al Shuyoukh.
  • Landmines - unexploded landmines and munitions are a hazard in Kuwait. We advise staying on well-used roads and paths as mined areas are often unmarked.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Kuwait should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.
