Exercise increased caution with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

Belize has higher safety and security risks than New Zealand, primarily due to violent crime.

Be careful, particularly in popular tourist destinations and public transport hubs including airports and bus stations. Travel in groups and avoid isolated areas, including unsupervised beaches, especially at night.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Belize should be aware of are:

  • Civil unrest - demonstrations and protests can happen, and may disrupt travel plans.
  • Natural disasters - hurricane season runs from June until November. Follow the advice of local authorities if a natural disaster happens.
  • Entry requirement - All visitors to Belize or those transiting through the Philip Goldson International Airport must complete an immigration and customs declaration form. Belizean authorities recommend completing the digital form prior to travel.

New Zealanders in Belize should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for adventure activities and medical evacuation by air. The safety standards of some transport and tour operators can vary.
