Before you go

New Zealanders travelling to any of the FIFA matches are encouraged to:

  • Read our travel advice for your destinations.
  • Register your details on SafeTravel. Sharing your plans and contact details with us gives us a way to let you know about important updates about your travel destination, and changes to our travel advice.
  • Be familiar with our advice for while you’re away.
  • Get travel insurance, and make sure it covers all the activities you plan to undertake. Comprehensive insurance is vital for travel in the US.
  • Download the FIFA World Cup app on iOS or Android. To enter the stadiums, you need an official ticket on the FIFA World Cup app. Printed copies or screenshots may not be accepted.
  • In case your phone is lost or stolen, print any flight and accommodation bookings and write out a list of important contacts.

Visa and entry rules

Each country has their own entry and exit requirements that you must follow. Consider applying for required visas or electronic travel authorisation (ESTA for the US, eTA for Canada and Mexico) well before you travel, as visa processing times may be long. Make sure you only apply for a visa or ESTA/eTA through official channels.

Carefully read our travel advisories, specifically about entry and exit requirements, for the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Always ensure you have the correct visa or ESTA and follow the rules. If you don't, you may be detained or deported.

Crime

New Zealanders travelling to host destinations, and particularly areas where matches are occurring, should be aware of opportunistic petty crime like pickpocketing, bag snatching, and passport theft. These types of crimes are common and tend to occur in urban centres, tourist areas, and on public transport, and the risk may increase with an influx of visitors.

You should:

  • Be security conscious in public places, guard belongings carefully, and never leave bags unattended.
  • Avoid leaving valuables in hotel rooms, rented accommodation, or vehicles due to the risk of burglary.
  • If your passport is stolen, report the theft to the police and apply immediately for a new passport online.
  • Keep informed of potential risks to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources. Follow any instructions issued by the local authorities.

While You’re Away

Please make sure your mobile phone is not in airplane mode when you arrive in your destination. Cities often send emergency alerts to all devices connected to nearby cell towers.

Please sign up for emergency notifications in the cities you are visiting.

In Los Angeles, register for NotifyLA. In Vancouver, register for Alertable.

Please be aware that most, if not all stadiums have a “clear bag policy”. Please check the bag restrictions for the stadiums you are attending.

Please contact the local Embassy or Consulate if:

  • Your passport is lost or stolen,
  • You are arrested or detained,
  • You are seriously injured.
