Avoid non-essential travel

Overview

The US Embassy in Oman has issued a shelter in place alert for American citizens.  We advise the New Zealand community to do the same until further notice.

Find a secure location within your residence or another safe building. Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.

Monitor the local media for updates. Be prepared to adjust your plans.

Keep your phone charged and maintain communication with family and friends to inform them of your wellbeing.

New Zealanders in need of urgent consular assistance can call the 24/7 Consular Emergency Line on +64 99 20 20 20.

The security situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable. We encourage you to monitor local media for updates and follow the advice of local authorities. For more information about this situation read our news article.

There are more significant safety or security concerns in Oman than you would usually find in New Zealand because of the potential for violent demonstrations and the threat of terrorism.

Conflicts in the Middle East could result in an increase in tensions elsewhere in the region. The security situation in the region could deteriorate without notice, and may result in further travel disruptions.

Terrorist attacks could target places visited by foreigners. Take care in tourist areas and be aware of your surroundings.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Oman should be aware of are:

  • Maritime travel - regional tensions make travelling in the Gulf area highly sensitive. There is also piracy in coastal waters.
  • Crime - watch out for petty theft, like pickpocketing or theft from vehicles.
  • Local laws and customs – some behaviours and dress that are normal in New Zealand are not legal in Oman. Learn and follow local laws and customs.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Oman should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for any planned adventure activities, and medical evacuation by air.
