A series of large earthquakes struck off the east coast of Russia on 30 July 2025.
The first earthquake was magnitude 8.7, with an epicentre 133 km south-east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Several significant aftershocks followed, measuring at magnitudes 6.9, 6.3, 5.5 and 5.7.
The 8.7 earthquake resulted in a high risk of tsunami occurrence across several countries, including Russia, Japan, the United States (Hawai’i), and several Pacific nations.
