Protests and civil unrest are expected to occur throughout South Africa following anti-immigrant organisations calls for a "national shutdown" on 30 June 2026. Demonstrations could occur up to and after this date. Similar demonstrations in the past have led to outbreaks of violence. Expect to see an increased Police presence and delays, especially in major cities.
We recommend you monitor local media and follow any advice issued by the local authorities, including any restrictions on movement or alternative routes. More advice about staying safe during protests and civil unrest can be found here - Protests and civil unrest.
There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of violent crime. There is a very high level of violent crime in South Africa, particularly in city centres and townships, and at night.
