Exercise normal safety and security precautions

Overview

Some things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Romania should be aware of are:

  • Do not travel from Romania to Ukraine. The security situation continues to be volatile.
  • Pick pocketing and bag-snatching occur, especially in urban areas. Assaults and thefts happen on intercity trains.
  • Drink spiking is an issue, especially in Bucharest's Old Town.
  • Thieves posing as police officers may ask for your ID and wallet.
  • Financial, dating and marriage scams occur.
  • Romania has one of the highest rates of road fatalities of all EU countries.

Maintain a high level of personal security awareness and take steps to safeguard and secure personal belongings.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Romania should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
