Overview 

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand, and some areas where you should not travel or should avoid non-essential travel. 

Some things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Republic of Congo should be aware of are: 

• Violent crime – armed robbery and assault is an issue, particularly in rural areas. Petty crime also happens, and foreigners may be targeted due to their perceived wealth. 
• Civil unrest – the security situation is calm but remains tense and could deteriorate quickly. Avoid any demonstrations, rallies and large gatherings. 
• Local travel – checkpoints are common. Be cautious when travelling outside of cities and along border areas. 

New Zealanders travelling or living in the Republic of the Congo should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.
