Overview

On 26 August 2026, significant flash flooding events have impacted Rasuwa district and the Nepal-China border area, where many tourists are on pilgrimage to Mt Kailash at this time of year, especially south Asian tourists.

The Bhote koshi river flooded around 9am Wednesday 26 August, local time, destroying several villages, roads and hydropower projects. Hundreds of people are believed to be missing in Nepal including foreign nationals.

Additionally, there are more significant safety or security concerns in Nepal than you would usually find in New Zealand because of possible civil unrest.

Significant protests in Nepal in September 2025 resulted in violent clashes, leading to a number of deaths and injuries. Civil unrest and protest activity has since eased, although protests are common and general strikes happen sometimes. New Zealanders in Nepal should avoid any areas affected by civil unrest, protest, and other public gatherings. 

Political rallies and demonstrations are common in Nepal. They can turn violent or have clashes between protestors and security forces. Avoid all protests and demonstrations.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Nepal should be aware of are:

• Crime - foreigners have been targeted at tourist sites, airports, hotel rooms, and buses. Crimes include sexual offences, harassment, and theft. Guard your belongings and avoid travelling alone or at night.
• Trekking - be prepared for altitude sickness. Do not trek alone, and let your whānau and friends in New Zealand know your plans.
• Seismic activity - earthquakes are common, which increases the risk of avalanches and landslides.
• Road safety - travel on public buses and vans can be dangerous. Don’t travel on overloaded or overcrowded vehicles or overnight buses.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Nepal should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes: 

• Helicopter rescue 
• Medical evacuation by air 
• Cancelled flights
• All of the activities you plan to undertake, such as trekking, rafting and mountain climbing.
