Exercise normal safety and security precautions with higher advice levels in some areas

Overview

Some things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Rwanda should be aware of are:

  • Border areas – borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi could close without notice. Be vigilant in these areas as the security situation could deteriorate with little warning.
  • Health – screening procedures for diseases such as Ebola and Marburg virus may be in place when entering and exiting Rwanda.
  • Security – grenade attacks have happened. Be security-conscious in public and crowded places, and follow any instructions issued by the local authorities.

On 17 May 2026, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that the Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).  You should expect potential exit health screening, entry restrictions on travellers who have visited these countries, and enhanced health screening measures upon arrival for travellers who have visited these countries. See Health advice below.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Rwanda should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air. Medical facilities are very limited throughout the country.
