On 17 May 2026, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that the Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). You should expect potential exit health screening, entry restrictions on travellers who have visited these countries, and enhanced health screening measures upon arrival for travellers who have visited these countries. New Zealanders travelling or living in Rwanda should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air. Medical facilities are very limited throughout the country.
