Overview

New Zealanders travelling or living in Georgia should be aware of:

Civil unrest—demonstrations and protests are common, especially in the capital in the capital Tbilisi.
Crime—watch out for petty crime, such as pickpocketing. Violent crime against foreigners has been reported in the past,
Local laws – It is illegal under Georgian law to enter Georgia from Russia, via Abkhazia or South Ossetia. Be aware of land border rules. Check whether you can bring your prescription medication into the country.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Georgia should have comprehensive travel insurance that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.

Measles Outbreak, October 2025
