Exercise increased caution

Overview

Antarctica is one of the coldest, windiest and driest places in the world, it is inhospitable and dangerous. Non-government travel is only possible during the summer season, when there is 24 hours of daylight, water temperatures rise, and sea ice melts.

Antarctica is a remote region with extremely limited medical facilities and search and rescue capabilities, it may take days or even weeks for help to arrive in an emergency.

New Zealanders travelling in Antarctica should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place, including for the costs of search and rescue, medical care, and evacuation by air.

Consular Assistance for New Zealanders

New Zealand has no consular presence in Antarctica, so the Government’s ability to provide assistance to New Zealanders in Antarctica is extremely limited.
