Official advice for New Zealanders living and travelling overseas

Register your travel

Where to register details on SafeTravel?

New Zealanders travelling or living overseas can register their details on SafeTravel at https://register.safetravel.govt.nz

Why is registering important?

We encourage all New Zealanders travelling or living overseas to register their details on SafeTravel. This allows us to send you important information following an emergency situation, or to provide consular assistance, while you are overseas. Just like making sure you’ve had the right immunisations and vaccinations and that you have comprehensive travel insurance, registering should be on your list of things to do before you leave home.

No matter where you are travelling to overseas, if you take the time now to register, then you can be assured that if an emergency situation develops in the country you are in, we will send you important information including how to access consular services in your location.

Who uses my information?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including New Zealand Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates-General around the world, use the registration information to

  • send information to registrants in an emergency (e.g. natural disaster, terrorist attack, civil unrest).
  • contact registrants to provide consular assistance (e.g. if there are concerns for your safety, or to return a lost passport).
  • send information such as new travel advisories relevant to New Zealanders travelling and residing overseas.

Our privacy notice sets out how the Ministry uses, discloses, stores, and disposes of the personal information we collect via SafeTravel.
