There is some risk to your safety in Tonga and we advise caution.
In November 2006, politically motivated rioting took place in central Nuku’alofa. Although the situation in Nuku’alofa has been calm since then, and restrictions on the movement of people have been lifted, emergency powers remain in place on the island of Tongatapu. New Zealanders are advised to avoid any demonstrations or protests as they have the potential to turn violent with little warning.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tonga should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders visiting or resident in Tonga are encouraged to register their details online.
