Tonga is generally peaceful with no significant security concerns. Successful elections under a newly designed democratic system were held in late 2010.
Crime
Crime levels in Tonga are relatively low, although there has been a rise in house-break-ins and property theft due to the economic downturn. There have also been some incidences of violent assault associated with robbery. Security risks increase after dark and New Zealanders should avoid going out alone or to isolated locations.
Transport safety
In late 2009, 74 people lost their lives when a passenger ferry the MV Princess Ashika sank. Maritime safety, particularly of older vessels, is a concern in Tonga.
Tonga’s domestic air services are currently in transition. There may be disruptions to scheduled services. We do not have sufficient information at this stage to judge the reliability of the new service.
General travel advice
New Zealanders travelling or living in Tonga should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders in Tonga are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
