There is extreme risk to your security in the border regions with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda due to armed banditry and we advise against all travel to these areas.

There is some risk to your security elsewhere in Tanzania, including Zanzibar, due to an underlying threat from terrorism, and violent crime, and we advise caution.

In August 1998, a terrorist attack was carried out against the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam killing 12 people. Further attacks, including in places frequented by foreigners, cannot be ruled out.

Violent crime, such as armed robbery, is increasing in Tanzania, including on Zanzibar and the Pemba Islands. In January 2009, a group of western tourists were robbed at gunpoint while returning to Moshi after climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. In September 2008, two separate attacks by armed bandits were made on European tourists staying near Tarangire National Park. In September 2008, a European tourist was shot by armed robbers at a guest house on the east coast of Zanzibar. Since 2007 there have been a number of serious incidents involving foreigners in the Arusha region.

New Zealanders are advised to be security conscious at all times and avoid walking alone in isolated areas and on beaches, particularly at night. Modesty and discretion should be exercised in both dress and behaviour away from tourist resorts to avoid offending local sensitivities.

Piracy has been reported in the coastal waters off Tanzania. Mariners are advised to be vigilant and to take appropriate precautionary measures in these waters. For more information view the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy report: www.icc-ccs.org

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tanzania should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tanzania are strongly encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
