A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck Samoa on 30 September. A tsunami generated by the earthquake resulted in a substantial number of deaths and injuries.   Localised damage occurred mainly along the south coast of Upolu as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.

Reconstruction efforts are underway.New Zealanders in Samoa are advised to follow any advice and instructions issued by the local authorities. If you are planning to travel to Samoa, we advise you to contact your booking agent or tour operator to check whether tourist services at your planned destination have been affected.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Samoa should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Samoa are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
