There is some risk to your safety in parts of Samoa and we advise caution due to the recent devastating tsunami.
A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck Samoa on 30 September. A tsunami generated by the earthquake resulted in a substantial number of deaths and injuries. Localised damage occurred mainly along the south coast of Upolu as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.
The Samoan Government advises that all affected roads have been cleared. All affected areas have been reconnected to electricity. Reconstruction efforts are underway. Emergency relief and reconstruction assistance is being provided by New Zealand and other countries. Outside the affected areas, the country continues to function normally.
New Zealanders currently in Samoa are advised to follow any advice and instructions issued by the local authorities. If you are planning to travel to Samoa, we advise you to contact your booking agent or tour operator to check whether tourist services at your planned destination have been affected.
New Zealanders in Samoa requiring assistance are advised to contact the New Zealand High Commission in Apia on Tel: 21 711 or alternatively, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington on Tel: +64 4 439 8000, Email: cons@mfat.govt.nz
New Zealanders travelling or living in Samoa should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
