There is some risk to your security in Oman due to the potential for civil unrest and an underlying threat from terrorism and we advise caution.
Since February 2011, an increasing number of protests have taken place in cities throughout Oman, including Muscat, Sohar, Sur and Salalah. While most protests have been peaceful to date, protests in Sohar have turned violent, with deaths and injuries reported.
New Zealanders throughout Oman are advised to avoid all protests, demonstrations and large public gatherings as even those intended as peaceful have the potential to turn violent. We recommend you monitor developments through local media, adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and maintain a high degree of security awareness in public places.
There is an underlying threat from terrorism in Oman. Terrorists continue to issue statements threatening to carry out attacks in the Gulf region, including against Western interests. New Zealanders are advised to take particular care in public and commercial areas known to be frequented by Western expatriates or travellers.
Piracy is a significant threat in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Mariners are advised to take appropriate precautionary measures in these waters. For more information view the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting centre.
New Zealanders are advised to respect religious and social traditions in Oman to avoid offending local sensitivities. Modesty and discretion should be exercised in both dress and behaviour.
New Zealanders travelling or living in Oman should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Oman are strongly encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
