On 22 July 2011, a large explosion in central Oslo near the Prime Minister’s office killed 8 people and injured dozens of others and caused extensive damage in the immediate vicinity. Not long after the explosion in Oslo a gunman opened fire at a youth camp on Utoeya Island, killing 68 people and injuring many others. A Norwegian national has been arrested in connection with both attacks.
Norway shares with the rest of Europe a threat from terrorism. New Zealanders in Norway are advised to stay informed of potential threats to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources. We recommend New Zealanders exercise a high degree of security awareness and follow any instructions issued by the Norwegian authorities.
New Zealanders travelling or living in Norway should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.
New Zealanders in Norway are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
