There is some risk to your security in Nepal due to the uncertain political and security situation. We advise caution.
Civil unrest
The political situation in Nepal is fragile. Bandhs (shutdowns), rallies and protests occur regularly and sometimes this results in violence between demonstrators and security forces, especially in the Terai (Nepal’s southern plains). In mid November 2013 Nepal will hold Constituent Assembly elections. There is a heightened possibility of protest-related violence during this time.
New Zealanders in Nepal are advised to avoid all large gatherings, protests and demonstrations as there is an increased risk of violence at such events. You should also note traffic is often severely affected during bandhs and essential supplies can be difficult to obtain.
Trekking
If you decide to trek in Nepal please keep your family and friends regularly updated regarding your location and intended route. Please also notify them if you intend to enter an area with limited telephone or internet coverage, as unexplained breaks in usual communication patterns can cause concern.
Trekking in Nepal should be done with a group using an experienced guide from a reputable company. Do not trek alone. Solo trekkers have been attacked and female travellers should be particularly vigilant.
General travel advice
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Nepal should have comprehensive travel and medical insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air, as well as cancelled flights.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Nepal are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
