The terrorist group Al Qaida has made a specific threat to conduct terrorist attacks across Europe and Denmark shares this threat with the rest of the region. Al Qaida and individuals and groups inspired by their ideology have previously conducted attacks in major cities across Europe and continue to plan attacks.

In November 2010, the Danish Security and Intelligence Service asked police districts throughout the country to increase their state of readiness against the terrorism threat in Denmark. The Danish Security and Intelligence Service continues to assess the level of threat as significant (see the Danish Security and Intelligence Service website for more information). Since October 2005, a number of individuals have been arrested and convicted in Denmark of terrorism related offences. In April 2008, three people were convicted of planning an act of terror. In June 2008, the Danish Embassy in Pakistan was attacked by Al Qaida. Denmark remains a target for terrorists due in part to the printing of the Mohammed cartoons and their reprinting in September 2010.

New Zealanders in Denmark are advised to be security conscious at all times, particularly in public places, and stay informed of potential risks to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources.

Demonstrations and protests occur from time to time in Denmark. New Zealanders are advised to avoid all protests as they can occasionally turn violent.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Denmark should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Denmark are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
