There is some risk to your security in Costa Rica due to the high level of violent crime and we advise caution.
Violent crime in Costa Rica can include armed robbery and car jacking. There have also been reports of “express kidnappings”, where individuals are forced to withdraw funds from automatic teller machines (ATMs) to secure their release.
We advise all New Zealanders travelling in Costa Rica to be safety conscious at all times, particularly in popular tourist destinations including airports, bus stations, harbour facilities and the capital city of San Jose.
Protests and demonstrations are common in Costa Rica and have the potential to turn violent. We recommend you avoid such situations.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Costa Rica should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders travelling or residing in Costa Rica are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
