There is a high risk to your security in the Pool region of the Republic of the Congo, and along the Ubangi river in the Likouala region, due to the risk of rebel activity and armed banditry. We advise against all tourist and non-essential travel there.
There is some risk to your security throughout the rest of the country. The Government of the Republic of the Congo signed a peace agreement in 2003 with the rebel group “Ninja”. While the situation in most of the country remains calm, this could change if the political situation changes, and we recommend New Zealanders travelling or resident in the Congo keep themselves up to date with the political and security situation.
There remains a risk of rebel activity in the Pool region. The road and railway between Brazzaville and Pointe Noire run through the Pool region and armed criminal gangs have been known to rob vehicles and trains. Travel between Brazzaville and Pointe Noire should therefore only be by air.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in the Congo (Brazzaville) should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in the Congo (Brazzaville) are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
