The terrorist group Al Qaida has made a specific threat to conduct terrorist attacks across Europe and Belgium shares this threat with the rest of the region. Al Qaida and individuals and groups inspired by their ideology have previously conducted attacks in major cities across Europe and continue to plan attacks.
The Belgian authorities have arrested and convicted a number of individuals for terrorism related offences in recent years.
New Zealanders in Belgium, as in the rest of Europe, are advised to be security conscious at all times, particularly in public places, and stay informed of potential risks to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources.
Demonstrations and protests occur from time to time in Belgium. New Zealanders are advised to avoid all protests as they can occasionally turn violent.
New Zealanders travelling or living in Belgium should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders travelling or living in Belgium are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
