Philippines

There is extreme risk to your security throughout Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago including Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi island groups. We advise against all travel there.

Rest of the Philippines (including Manila)

There is some risk of terrorism and kidnapping and we advise caution. New Zealanders should exercise heightened security awareness when travelling anywhere in the Philippines.

Although some arrests of suspected terrorists have been made and the Philippines government remains committed to combating terrorism and improving security, there continues to be a risk from terrorism. We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks that could occur at any time, anywhere, especially in the southern Philippines and Metro Manila.

Extreme caution should be exercised for personal safety in public places. New Zealanders should avoid using public transport where possible (including passenger ferries), and only use taxis that are recommended by people you can trust or fleet vehicles from reputable and established companies. New Zealanders should be particularly cautious at places like tourist resorts popular with foreigners, landmarks, or places such as shopping malls, bars and nightclubs, and establishments frequented by foreigners or owned by/identified with western interests. Public protests and rallies should be avoided.

Before setting out, please advise friends/relatives of your travel itinerary and, where possible, tell them of any changes.

New Zealanders visiting or living in the Philippines are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
