Nepal

There is some risk to your security in Nepal due to the unpredictable security situation and threat from terrorism and we advise caution.

Elections were held in Nepal on 10 April 2008 and it is likely the situation will remain uncertain until counting is finalised. New Zealanders are advised to avoid all political rallies, protests, and demonstrations, as there is an increased risk of violence at such events. You should also comply with any restrictions and instructions issued by the local authorities. New Zealanders are advised to monitor events closely and remain vigilant as the security situation could change quickly.

The security situation in Kathmandu has deteriorated recently and remains unpredictable. Several explosions were reported in the Kathmandu Valley over the weekend of 5-6 April and on 7 April 2008. Earlier bombings in Southern Nepal in recent weeks resulted in some deaths and injuries. Violent protests occurred across Kathmandu on 22 January 2008 and access to the airport was affected on 23 January 2008. Further disruptions could occur without warning. On 2 September 2007, four explosions occurred at crowded locations in Kathmandu including at a bus stop and on a microbus, killing three people and injuring 26.

Travel beyond Kathmandu Valley remains unpredictable. In the past, curfews have been announced at short notice in Kathmandu Valley and other towns and districts throughout the country. New Zealanders should check with their hotel/guesthouse for details of any curfews and monitor local news. It is essential that you stay indoors during curfew hours.

A shortage of fuel, gas and other essential supplies is affecting Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal. Before travelling, check that your tour operator or hotel can provide an acceptable level of service and security.

Before setting out on a trek, obtain up-to-date information on the trekking area. Due to the security situation it is recommended that trekking be done with a group and an experienced guide from a reputable company. You are advised not to trek alone or at night. Maoists’ demands for money and valuables from trekkers occur on all the main trekking routes and New Zealanders should exercise caution when they are approached for donations.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Nepal should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies that include provision for medical evacuation by air, as well as cancelled flights.

New Zealanders are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
